How to Use an AED Machine – Step-by-Step Guide for Hypermarket Staff
What Is an AED Machine?
AED machine (Automated External Defibrillator) is a life-saving device used to restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest. It’s easy to use, even by non-medical personnel, and is designed for public access in places like malls, gyms, and hypermarkets in Oman.
Why Hypermarket Staff Should Know How to Use an AED
In large commercial spaces like hypermarkets, emergencies can happen at any time. An AED can double or triple the chances of survival if used quickly. Training your staff ensures:
- Fast emergency response
- Increased customer trust
- Legal safety and workplace responsibility
When Should You Use an AED machine?
Use an AED when someone:
- Collapses suddenly
- Is unconscious and not breathing
- Has no pulse or shows signs of cardiac arrest
Step-by-Step Guide to Using an AED
Step 1: Check the Scene and Call for Help
Ensure the area is safe. Shout for help and call emergency services in Oman (9999) immediately.
Step 2: Begin CPR
While waiting for the AED, start chest compressions (hard and fast, about 100–120 per minute).
Step 3: Turn On the AED machine
Open the AED lid or press the power button. The device will give you audio and visual instructions.
Step 4: Expose the Chest and Attach Pads
Dry the chest if it’s wet. Apply the electrode pads as shown in the diagram (usually one on the upper right chest and one on the lower left side).
Step 5: Follow AED Prompts
- The AED will analyze the heart rhythm.
- Stand clear when instructed and press the “shock” button if advised.
Step 6: Resume CPR
After shock (if given), continue CPR immediately until medical professionals arrive or the person starts to move.
